How to Add and Sync your device with Ovi.com
Nokia just (finally) launched their global Ovi.com page. You can now access all of Ovi‘s features from there. Granted Maps still takes you to the Nokia Maps site, and Gaming takes you to N-gage.
One of the new features, that has everyone excited is Ovi.com‘s new Sync feature. Previously known as My Nokia Backup. This allows you to sync your device with Ovi.com and hence ‘store’ and access your contacts and calender entries online. If you ever lose your device, or format it etc etc, all your data will be backed up on Ovi so you can restore all your information directly from the site.
What this effectively means is that you can restore your backup anywhere ! No need of a computer nearby or wires or anything. All you need is your symbian device that supports Ovi sync, and a dataplan such as GPRS or WiFi etc.
Adding your device :
When you first log into Ovi.com , it will probably display a huge banner that says ” Add your device” right smack in the middle of the page . You’ll have to click that to get started.
This will take you to the “Add a device” wizard.
First you’ll have to select the model of the phone you intend to sync with Ovi. Choose it from the list that is presented to you and click “Next”.
In the next step, it’ll ask you to enter your phone number and information :
Enter it all in and click Next.
In step 3, it will display all your info. Click next as confirmation.
And you’re done ! An sms will be sent to your phone. It usually takes about 5 minutes but the service has been known to take an hour or two on some occasions. The last step will give you a PIN code to enter into your device. Note this down, because it is important for when you receive your configuration text message. In this case its 2121 but yours might be different.
Now once you receive the text message, scroll to it in your device inbox :
Once you select and open it, it will ask you to enter a PIN Code :
This is where you enter the PIN Code from the website that you noted down earlier. Once you enter it in, the Message will be displayed :
Just like it says, go to Options and select “Save“, to automatically save the Ovi.com settings in your device’s Sync application.
And thats basically all there is to it.
Syncing your device :
Now that you’ve said Ovi.com‘s info in your device’s Sync application and added your device to Ovi.com , you can now Sync it with Ovi , so you can mess around with your contacts, calender, notes or you
r to-do list all online. This can also serve as a backup of your contacts and info, incase you want to restore all of it onto another phone.
To sync your device, on your phone scroll to your Sync application. In my N82 it was under Tools –> Connectivity :
Open the Sync application, and you’ll be presented with a list of services that your sync application currently supports, and the last time you synced with them :
Select or highlight Ovi.com and select Options–> Synchronise :
Your device will then begin to try to Synchronise with the service. A popup will appear, asking you to select a dataplan. Wifi, GPRS , whatever works for you. The amount of time the process takes, depends on the speed of your dataplan. For me it took about a minute, using WiFi.
The application will tell you what its doing, the whole time, until it finishes the Sync process :
If you wish to check more information about the sync process, simply highlight Ovi.com and select Options –> View Log :
Thats about it from your phone.
Online at Ovi.com :
Now that all the information from your phone is available online at Ovi.com for you to manage, lets see how that works out. Go back to Ovi.com (if you’ve been there this whole time, refresh the page or Log out and back in again) to view your information :
You’ll see that the site’s calender in your profile has been updated with the info from your device, and your notes and contacts are all displayed there.
( Note : I do not know why one of my Note entries is displayed in Green Font in the above picture. Also, the calender entries on the site did not match up with my actual calender entries on my device. For some strange reason they were all about a day or two early.)
Here all your contacts are displayed. You can create and manage them or mess around with contact groups.
(Note : One weird bug I noticed is that because of Ovi‘s syncing in the contacts application, noone can have a birthday prior to 1980. Which is a little …uhh…weird. I hope they fix that soon.)
The Calender :
Here is where all the c
alender entries from your device are displayed. As I said earlier, for some strange reason, all my calender entries were not matched up with the correct date like in my device. I’ve set “Leave on travel to Jaipur” to tomorrow, the 30t but on the Ovi.com site it’s displayed under yesterday the 28th.
Its probably just a bug on the site, that I hope gets fixed soon.
The Notes and To-do list :
Here you can view and edit your notes or your to-do list. Pretty basic.
Managing your device :
If at any time you wish to manage or delete your device or phone number, just click on “Manage your device” on the extreme right side of the Ovi.com site :
Here you can also view the time/date of your last sync, restore your online Ovi.com backup onto your phone and other actions.
Thats about it ! Ovi.com‘s online backup can be a really useful feature. Cheers Nokia !

Hi, great blog BTW.
I do not know we could use this in Argentina, as we cannot receive sms from abroad for free.
awesome stuff!!!
I don’t get the sms for activation. Could you post the sync settings (obviously without your user/pass)?
Sure. Here it is :
Sync profile name : Ovi.com
Applications :-
Contacts :
Include in sync : Yes
Database in phone : C:Contacts.cdb
Remote database : ./Contact/Unfiled
Synchronisation type: Both ways
Calender :
Include in sync : Yes
Remote Database : ./EventTask/Tasks
Synchronisation type : Both ways
Notes :
Include in sync : Yes
Remote Datebase : ./Note/Unfiled
Synchronisation type : Both ways
Connection settings :-
Server version : 1.1
Data Bearer : Internet
Access point : Ask
Host address : http://sync.ovi.com/services/syncml
Port : 443
Username : your_ovi_username
Password : your_ovi_password
Allow sync requests : Yes
Accept all sync requests : No
Network authentication : No
Thats all ! Hope that helps :)
Thanks, I have the same problem I didn’t receive an sms.
I tried the settings, but it says wrong hostadress :(
Other solutions?
Darn. Thats about it I guess. I’ll mess around and see if I can find any other method :)
You make a mistake on the host,
it reads “http://sync.ovi.com/services/syncml”,
but it sould be
“https://sync.ovi.com/services/syncml”
But now I’m getting “username or password not valid” :( buaaa!

Whoops ! Thanks for clearing that up !
Yup my user name and password are coming as invalid too, why?!
Cj . did you receive a certificate?
Thanks for the info.
@ Alex : Hey there ! I really have no idea why they would come up as Invalid. The settings are exactly what they are in my phone :( .
@Zobot : I just received an sms actually. When you open it up and enter in the PIN code, it saves the settings automatically and thats it.
How does the user and pass appear in your settings?
User: oviuser
Password: ovipass
Or something like,
User: oviuser@ovi.com
Password: ovipass
Any other setting that we could be missing?
It appears as “yourusername” (or “oviuser”). No @ovi.com at all.
I’ve gone over all the settings and its exactly the same as i posted in the comments section (with the exception of what you corrected).
Could you try changing the server version to 1.2 and trying it ? Its 1.1 in my phone but thats the only thing I can think of lol.
I am from Argentina. The problem is that Claro, doesn´t have an agreement with UK to receive SMS from there, as they told me during concurrent claims I’ve made. Not just Ovi, but is impossible to use SMSs with Twitter, With Facebook, etc. And there is no option from this Company; they can´t give a solution to the SMS stuff, even paying for it.
Perhaps the PIN entering procedure involves something else, (like validating the user at the sync server).
I don´t understand why Nokia, or Ovi, or whatever, make this service so SMS dependent, and don´t provide an alternative, to configure it!!!
Additionally can´t understand WTF should I do with Ovi PC Sync, and PC Suite together installed in my PC !!! (should they stay both?, should I uninstall PC Suite??????) Why don´t they upgrade PC Suite, to add the new services, instead of issuing a product named different ????? This is very confusing, and very incomplete; I think that it should be clear for us, and I´m not a normal end user; I work in IT. What about a “normal” user?
And Claro: They ´ve got users everyplace in Latin America and are trying to posision themselves as a high tech mobile network company, adding the newest terminals, and can´t give solution to this issue.
I understand that the PIN code is only the password to open the sms, but maybe is something else.
I had tried server 1.2 and other settings I found on ther websites, but I still have the invalid user and password.
Too bad.
I entered the info exactly as provided into the Sync tool and also got the invalid username and password problem.
Has anyone had success with this?
Hey Ahmad, sorry for the late reply. Apparently some people are having troubles, such as it not working, when manually entering in the info. You’re best bet would be to email the Ovi team from the website.
Sorry I couldnt have been of more help !
The problem is that the password for syncml is not your ovi.com password! This is something else and you don´t get information about it. That is too bad cause you can´t sync your mobile with thunderbird etc.
I am always getting an ‘invalid host address’ message. What am I doing wrong? I have a Nokia 5800 XpressMusic
Hey there Jim. According to Ovi.com, the 5800 is not yet supported. That might be the problem, although you can try emailing them for more support.
any idea to integrate the calendar with our blog? this is nice features!
Reading your posts above, I am happy to say I got no problems…
Esse é um ótimo tutorial de funcionamento do OVI.
hey!
you have the stuff for contacts/calendar/notes but what about text messages? do you know the 'remote database' for that?
thank you! :)
