Nokia BetaLabs Introduces ‘Nokia Image Space’

And we have another Photo application from Nokia BetaLabs. This one is actually, very VERY cool.

Basically, in Lamen terms, Nokia Image Space works on any Nokia Symbian S60 device that has a built in compass and GPS. When you take a picture using it, it not only just Geo-Tags your image, but records the Orientation and Position too. So you if take a picture of a building from its front, then more from its sides and back, you’ll see it nicely arranged in that orientation, in Nokia Image Space. Pretty cool eh ?

Here’s a video to clue you in on the new app :

And straight from the Blog Post on BetaLabs :

Nokia Image Space provides you a new view to your own photos, as well as to those from your friends and other people.

You simply link your Flickr account to Image Space. You can then start browsing and sharing photos in Image Space and this way building a view to your part of the world. Your account, the privacy settings and contact lists are handled in Flickr. You see your Flickr contacts and those photos you have access to. Moreover, the comments, tags and photo descriptions can be viewed and edited in Image Space.

When there are enough photos of a given area which have been made publicly available, Image Space generates a 3D presentation from them. This feature will be ramped up in phases during the next two months, so please be patient. You can see some examples now at Helsinki and Tampere.

Notice: Nokia Image Space is an experimental research project by Nokia Research Center. Uploading photos by using Nokia Share Online client in the phone generates data traffic between the mobile phone and the service. The traffic costs depend on your network operator and data plan.

Compatibility and system requirements :

Nokia Image Space browser

* Adobe Flash 10 plugin for browser
* Firefox, IE or Safari browsers (Some differences in behavior between PC and Mac)

Nokia Image Space Capture for S60

* Tested on: N97 mini, Nokia 6210 Navigator, Nokia 6710 Navigator, Nokia 6720 Classic. Should work in S60 3.2 and 5.0 devices with inbuilt compass.
* Known issues: N97, some sensor issues with IS Capture

Check out the Nokia Image Space page on BetaLabs for more info, and to download the app.

While I know this seems like just another Photo App from BetaLabs in addition to already present Nokia Photo Apps (like Share Online, Image Exchange, Photo Browser), Nokia Image Space is an entirely different and unique experimental application. It’s main purpose (as you read above) is VERY cool and I seriously hope this takes off or gets included in upcoming devices. Plus I love the fact that they’ve chosen to integrate it with Flickr !

Cant wait to see where this app goes.
