Microsoft Silverlight for Symbian Released & Out of Beta

Microsoft Silverlight for Symbian has officially come out of Beta, and is now available to download on the Ovi Store.

Silverlight for Symbian brings the whole Silverlight experience to Symbian^1 (aka S60v5) devices.

Some of the major features that Silverlight for Symbian provides are:

  • Media: Hardware assisted Media playback of H.264 content. This gives a great media viewing experience using full hardware decode and hardware post processing.
  • IIS Smooth Streaming: Enables users to access live and on demand media content streamed using IIS Smooth Streaming including multiple bit rate switching.
  • Rich UI: Developers get access to the Silverlight V2 surface area to create Rich Interactive Web Applications.
  • .NET Programmability: .NET Compact Framework class libraries and runtime.

Right now Silverlight is only officially compatible with the Nokia 5800 and N97 variants with support for more Symbian devices promised.

Personally, I see no point to this, but if you’re interested, you can download Silverlight for Symbian from the Ovi Store.
